After recent allegations of being involved intimately with a 17-year-old girl and of possessing broad ties to human traffickers brought forth against Representative Matt Gaetz, Gaetz has publicly denied the stories.
This week, in an article released by the New York Times, it was reported that recent accusations against Rep. Matt Gaetz (R, FL) have led to the opening of a federal investigation of sexual misconduct. On Monday, the New York Times reported that Gaetz was currently being investigated for whether or not he had been sexually involved, two years ago, with a 17-year-old girl who he had paid for and traveled with. On Tuesday morning, Rep. Gaetz publicly denounced such accusations. However, Tuesday afternoon, accusations of alleged involvement with interstate sex trafficking arose against Gaetz. Similarly, Gaetz denounced these accusations. Despite remaining under investigation, Gaetz has not been charged with any crimes.
According to three individuals who were briefed about the investigation, Gaetz is currently being looked into for a broader investigation of another Florida local official. Joel Greenberg– a local Florida government official– and his recent indictment for having an illegal sexual relationship with a minor, has led to Gaetz being investigated for any possible ties to Greenberg.
Gaetz explained his position on the accusations, claiming, “Over the past several weeks my family and I have been victims of an organized criminal extortion involving a former DOJ official seeking $25 million while threatening to smear my name. We have been cooperating with federal authorities in this matter and my father has even been wearing a wire at the FBI’s direction to catch these criminals.”Gaetz expanded on this sentiment, saying, “The planted leak to the New York Times tonight was intended to thwart that investigation. No part of the allegations against me are true, and the people pushing these lies are targets of the ongoing extortion investigation. I demand the DOJ immediately release the tapes, made at their direction, which implicate their former colleague in crimes against me based on false allegations.” Gaetz went on to accuse former Department of Justice prosecutor David McGee of the supposed extortion. McGee confirmed that he had met with Gaetz’ father. However, he refused to elaborate further. McGee told a newspaper, “If there is a tape, play the tape. There is nothing on that tape that is untoward. It is a pleasant conversation of a dad concerned about his son and the trouble his son was in.”
Lastly, Gaetz, when asked about the 17-year-old girl he’s accused of being sexually involved with two years ago, he said that “The person doesn’t exist. I have not had a relationship with a 17-year-old. That is totally false. The allegation is, as I read in the New York Times is, I have traveled with some 17-year-old in some relationship. That is false and records will bear that out to be false.”
Since then, several Democratic Congressmen have called for Gaetz to be removed from the committee. However, Kevin McCarthy has refused to do so until any charges are brought forth, saying “There was a New York Times story that I read, I haven’t been able to talk to Mr. Gaetz yet. Mr. Gaetz denies the story. I look forward to talking to Mr. Gaetz. I haven’t heard anything from the DOJ or others, but I will deal with it if anything comes to be true.”
