Effort to recall California Governor Gavin Newsom reaches official threshold to proceed

Gavin Newsom - Governor

The effort to recall Californian Governor, Gavin Newsom, has reached the threshold to proceed.

The long talked about Newsom Recall is officially moving forward as the campaign has reached over 1.6 million verified signatures. This recall comes as he’s received mounting criticism for his balancing of handling the pandemic in his state and restoring things back into operation, such as returning students back to school. Newsom told CNN that the recall is “An RNC-backed Republican recall of White supremacists, anti-Semites and people who are opposed to immigration and immigrants is an accurate assessment of who’s behind this recall.”

The next steps are a pattern of 30 day reviews, starting with a process to set all the signatures in stone. For 30 days, voters will be permitted to write requests to withdraw their names from the petition, if enough signatures are retained, then the recall will move along with the next step. This next step will be given to the Department of Finance to take care of, they will be the ones to estimate the cost of the recall. Then, a budget committee will be given 30 days to assess the costs. Lastly, the Lieutenant Governor of California will set a date for the removal of Newsom, and election of a replacement governor.

Former San Diego Mayor, Kevin Faulconer, who blamed Newsom’s policies as the reason California lost a seat in the House of Representatives, will be running as a possible replacement governor. Another former official, Doug Ose, is also looking to replace Newsom, and as you may have heard, so is the famous Caitlyn Jenner. The two former officials make competent candidates and may understandably seem like they shouldn’t have to worry about Jenner’s competition, but Jenner shouldn’t be underestimated. Not only does she possess great fame and fortune, but she has the support of campaign advisors that served Trump’s 2016 and 2020 campaigns, making it possible to gain favoritism in the polls by Californian Republicans who feel let down by their governor.
