A suspect has been apprehended in connection to the Atlanta, GA mass shootings. The early narrative that the shootings were racially motivated seems to be an inaccurate assessment that was originally speculated by multiple media outlets.
A targeted massage parlor shooting ends with 8 tragic deaths in Atlanta GA on Tuesday, March 16th. Six of those deaths were Asian and two were White. Law enforcement was able to apprehend Robert Arron Long, 21, after identifying his car from security footage, spotting his vehicle, and then pushing the suspects’ vehicle into a controlled spin, The Daily Wire reports. Long was then taken into custody without incident.
After speaking with Long, Fox News reported that he took “full responsibility” for the attacks. Additionally, Long also confessed that the attacks were not racially motivated, even revealing another unexpected motive. The supect claims he chose the locations (massage parlors) because, according to Long, “he saw the locations as an outlet for him to succumb to purported sex-addiction temptations.” CNN reports the suspect had been to rehab twice for sexual addiction after speaking with Long’s former roommate. Allegedly, the suspect’s explanation of his motive goes alongside what his former roommate is now reporting to CNN. This new information has not seemed to stop Mayor Bottoms from insisting the attack was racially motivated.
The police mentioned that the shooter had intended on driving from Atlanta to an unknown location in Florida and carry out more attacks. “It’s very likely there would have been more victims,” Says Mayor Bottoms. Mayor Bottoms also says, “In the same way African Americans across this country asked for support and we asked for people to stand with us over the summer, it’s important that people stand with our Asian brothers and sisters in the same way.”
A loss of life is always tragic. Additionally, it is important to remember that this case is still under investigation. Thus, as of right now it does not look like this particular case was racially charged, as there is no sufficient evidence that would support such a claim. America mourns for the innocent souls who lost their lives and for their families left carrying the burdens.
