CBS News has predicted Republican Julia Letlow will win the special election for Louisiana’s 5th district, which was originally won by Julia’s late husband Luke Letlow who had died due to COVID-19 complications.

Originally Luke Letlow was set to succeed Representative Ralph Abhram, under whom Luke had worked as a campaign manager for. Luke had already won the GOP runoff in December 2020. However just mere days before Luke was set to be sworn in, he died of COVID-19 complications. Thus special elections were held, and Luke’s wife Julia Letlow ran on the Republican’s side. Julia’s campaign announcement was “running to continue the mission Luke started — to stand up for our Christian values, to fight for our rural agriculture communities, and to deliver real results to move our state forward” [CBS].

Both Former President Trump, and Vice-President Mike Pence had endorsed her, as well as House minority leader Kevin McCarthy and former ambassador of the US to the UN Nikki Haley. CBS has predicted that Julia will indeed win the 5th district. The New York Times has recorded that Julia won the district with a resounding 64.5% of the vote. Making her the first Republican woman to represent Louisiana in Congress as well will increase the number of Republican women in the house to a total of 31 [NYT].

The National Republican Congressional Committee Chair congratulated her after Julia’s win, “Congratulations to Julia Letlow on her victory. Julia has overcome tremendous adversity and is an inspiration to all of us. Julia will be a powerful, conservative voice for the people of Louisiana and I look forward to working with her in Congress.” After her win Julia Letlow released the following statement after the projection of her winning the seat: “This is an incredible moment and it is truly hard to put into words, what was born out of the terrible tragedy of losing my husband, Luke, has become my mission in his honor to carry the torch and serve the good people of Louisiana’s 5th District. I am humbled that you would entrust me with the honor of your vote and the privilege to serve you in Congress. A simple thank you doesn’t fully encapsulate the depth of my gratitude”. Julia has also signaled that she would like to run again in 2022 and keep the seat [The Hill].
