POLL: nearly three quarters of Americans support recent $1.9 trillion stimulus bill

The Coronavirus Relief and Stimulus Legislation signed into law by President Biden last week has had a favourable response from a Politico poll.

The poll was carried out between March 12-15, 2021 with 1,993 registered voters. The survey asked voters whether they supported or opposed “the $1.9 trillion coronavirus relief package that President Biden signed into law.” 72% of the voters asked about the legislation supported it, whilst 21% opposed it. Out of the 72% who supported it, 48% of these voters “strongly” supported the bill whilst the other 24% “somewhat” supported it. The other 7% had no strong view either way. The survey has a margin error of 2 percentage points.

The support is nearly across-the-board from Democrats with 95% of them supporting the legislation, whilst 69% of independents also supported it. There was no support from the GOP in the senate for this bill. GOP voters are split on whether they support it or not with 44% supporting the bill and 48% opposing it. The survey’s results indicate support for the law is high as President Biden, Vice President Harris and other administration officials travel across the country to promote the new law on their “Help Is Here” tour. The president started the tour on Tuesday when he visited Smith Flooring in Chester, Pennsylvania.

Republicans have worked to lessen support for the law by citing its $1.9 trillion price tag and provisions they say are unrelated to the pandemic, though their efforts have done little to dampen the enthusiasm of voters. In follow-up questions, voters also expressed support for two of the law’s most significant inclusions: the stimulus checks that some Americans have already received, and the extension of unemployment insurance benefits.

“The broad-based, bipartisan support for stimulus checks is evidence of the broad awareness that many Americans need a lifeline right now,” said John Leer, economist for Morning Consult. “It’s no surprise the extension of unemployment benefits is also extremely popular: Americans acknowledge unemployed workers deserve additional financial support until job growth resumes.” At this stage, Joe Biden’s approval rating sits at 62%, with 34% disapproving of the job he’s doing so far.
