Biden administration announces $86 million hotel contract to house migrants at Southern border

United States - Border

The Biden Administration is currently racing to find bed space for migrant children as the number of unaccompanied minors in government custody hit 15,500 on Saturday. Following such news, the Biden Administration announced how they plan to partially deal with one of the issues at hand: the American Southern-Border Crisis.

Joe Biden’s administration secured an $86 million contract for hotels to house migrants that have made their way to the US border. Axios says, “The contract through Endeavors, a Texas-based nonprofit, is for six months but could be extended and expanded. The hotels will be near border areas, including in Arizona and Texas.” Axios also reports “More than 13,000 family members who crossed the U.S. border illegally have been allowed into the country since the start of January, many released into border communities.”

This contract comes at a time the current president struggles to handle the surging number of family and kids trying to enter the US. This has been one of the largest surge of migrants at the border in decades. Some conservatives such as Governor Greg Abbott believe the crisis contributed to how Biden portrayed his immigration policies to be more lenient and empathetic compared to the Trump administration and his administration also revoking multiple of Trump administration policies.

Custom Border Protection recently released data stating that the number of migrant’s family members caught crossing the border has doubled between January and February. Migrant families attempting to cross the U.S. southern border spiked massively in 2021, going from 7,000 families in January to more than 19,000 only a month later. Additionally, Fox Business reported the unaccompanied children and single minors caught crossing the border has increased from 5,694 in January to 9,297 in February alone. Many have inferred that the flood in mass-migration is directly related to the change in administration. Additionally, the mass-migrations have forced the migrants into horrible living conditions during their journeys. CNN recently reported that as of Saturday March 19th there were 5,000 unaccompanied children being held in “jail-like facilities”. CNN also reports that the surge is still rising and is likely to peak in May, based on past migrant patterns.

Axios says “growing numbers of migrant families trying to come to the U.S. — in addition to already overwhelming numbers of kids crossing the border without their parents or legal guardians…appear to be straining government resources,” The Blaze reported earlier in the month that one of the migrant facilities was at 729% capacity and allegedly there were children taking turns sleeping on the floors and could only shower weekly. The Blaze recently reported on the $86 million contract saying, “it will come at a heft cost to the taxpayer”.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott has made his opinion on the matter very clear, stating “The Biden Administration has no excuse for subjecting these children to these kinds of conditions, President Biden’s refusal to address the border crisis is not only enabling criminal actors like human traffickers and smugglers, but it is exposing innocent unaccompanied children to illness and potentially unsafe living conditions. The administration must act now to keep these children safe, secure our border, and end this humanitarian crisis.”
