According to multiple reports, former Trump administration press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders will announce her campaign to become the governor of the state of Arkansas on Monday.
First reported by Washington Post journalist Josh Dawson, he tweeted out “Sarah Huckabee Sanders, former press secretary for President Trump, will announce tomorrow that she’s running for governor of Arkansas. She’s seen as leader in the polls and the president’s preferred candidate in a GOP state,” Sunday night. NBC News reported Sanders has been “quietly planning for the bid for over a year.”
With current Governor Asa Hutchinson (R-AR) reaching the end of her term limit, Sanders will join a race that features two fellow high-profile Republicans, Lieutenant Governor Tim Griffin and Attorney General Leslie Rutledge.
As the daughter of the former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee, Sanders looks to make the jump from the Trump administration’s third press secretary, a nearly two-year stint that gained her national attention. Former President Donald Trump cast his support for her Arkansas governor bid after she left the White House in July of 2019.
“She is a very special person with extraordinary talents, who has done an incredible job,” said Trump. “I hope she decides to run for Governor of Arkansas — she would be fantastic.”
