While Congress certified the Electoral College victory for President-elect Joe Biden, a massive rally that had President Donald Trump host a speech decrying the election turned violent, with rioters clashing with law enforcement and storming Capitol Hill, even breaching the building and running rampant inside the Capitol Building.
Currently, the House and Senate entered a recess from the certification process and evacuated as the building went under lockdown. Vice President Mike Pence and Senator Charles Grassley have been transported to an undisclosed, secure location. Rioters have all but invaded the building, with dozens of people storming law enforcement and entering the building
Inside, security is struggling to contain the rioters. Newly-elected Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC) tweeted out a video showing the violent clashes between rioters and law enforcement.
Shots have been reported inside the building, according to accounts from Rep. Tim Burchett (R-TN), with someone being taken out from the building on a stretcher. An armed standoff appears to have taken place at the door of the House.
Washington, D.C., Mayor Muriel Bowser announced a citywide curfew at 6:00 PM, hoping to slow the chaos that is tearing through the city.
President Trump and Donald Trump Jr. have expressed contempt for the violence, with the President “asking for everyone at the U.S. Capitol to remain peaceful.”
According to White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany, the National Guard has been called in at President Trump’s request to contain the violence. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi requested the national guard earlier in the day.
