After lambasting any coronavirus vaccine manufactured under the Trump administration during her own campaign, Vice President-elect Kamala Harris received her dose on Tuesday. While receiving the Moderna vaccine on cable television, she encouraged the nation to do the same.
“I want to encourage everyone to get the vaccine. It is relatively painless, it happens really quickly. It is safe,” she said. “This is about saving lives. It’s literally about saving lives. I trust the scientists, and it is the scientists who created and approved this vaccine, everyone.”
“So I urge everyone, when it is your turn, get vaccinated. It’s about saving your life, the life of your family members, and the life of your community,” she finished.
However, for those who remember her remarks during the Vice Presidential debate, she proudly told the nation she would refuse the vaccine “if Donald Trump tells us we should take it.” Dangerously undermining confidence in public health, she advised America to distrust the word of its duly elected President.
Even prior to the Vice President debate did she cast disregard toward the word of President Trump, telling CNN that “I will say that I would not trust Donald Trump and it would have to be a credible source of information that talks about the efficacy and the reliability of whatever he’s talking about.”
Following the attempted destruction of the position of the Presidency’s credibility towards public health, relying on President-Elect Joe Biden’s reception of the virus reveals the purely political nature of her strike against President Trump and her willingness to sacrifice an opportunity to sow confidence in the vaccine and potentially even lives to win political points.
To question the effectiveness of the vaccine based upon who encourages taking it only to take it anyway as that same individual rightfully boasts about the effectiveness demands a new level of hypocrisy and sleaziness. Trying to swipe political points at the expense of the public’s confidence cannot be remedied by a sudden 180 to the moral high ground and only further diminishes trust, as the question of what changed arises.
Be prepared, America. This is who occupies the Vice Presidency for the next four years.
