It all started with “15 days to slow the spread.” We are now in month six of the lockdown. While many places have begun to open, several states have kept their schools, restaurants, and other businesses closed. Some states have even started fining and arresting pastors for holding church services or singing. Some people have fought against the lockdown from the beginning, others are only now realizing the danger of such governmental control. Yet some people still stand in support of this blatant governmental overstep.
In an article published by Marker Watch it was brought up that the government should start enforcing regular lockdowns to save the environment. The author says that we need to “do capitalism differently” and states the need for a “climate lockdown.”
Under a “climate lockdown,” governments would limit private-vehicle use, ban consumption of red meat, and impose extreme energy-saving measures, while fossil-fuel companies would have to stop drilling. To avoid such a scenario, we must overhaul our economic structures and do capitalism differently.Mariana Muzzucato
The fact that this is even thinkable, much less accepted is outrageous. This just proves the idea that if you give the government an inch they will take a mile.
Does the government have the right to impose a lockdown simply to help the environment? Maybe not, but do they have the right to impose a lockdown for health reasons? It’s a slippery slope that America may have fallen too far down.
This may only be one person’s opinion, but it’s a dangerous way of thinking. If lockdowns become normalized, then anytime the government wants to trap us in our homes for our “own good” fewer and fewer people will oppose it.
Hopefully, people will continue to wake up, but I fear people may just be falling back asleep.
