Over 200 Chinese Apps Banned in India Within Last 3 Months

The Indian government banned an additional 118 Chinese mobile apps to the original 59 that were banned in June. Including the apps banned in July that is a total of 224 Chinese apps that are now prohibited in India.

Some of the apps banned include TikTok, PUBG, We Chat, ALIPAY, Youku, and AppLock. Section 69 of the Information Technology Act is where these bans fall under. It is possible that a “fresh face-off at the border” is what prompted the additional bans.

The IT Ministry released this statement:

“The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology has received many complaints from various sources including several reports abut misuse of some mobile apps available on Android and iOS platforms for stealing and surreptitiously transmitting users’ data in an unauthorized manner to servers which have locations outside India. The compilation of these data, its mining and profiling by elements hostile to national security and defence of India, which ultimately impinges upon the sovereignty and integrity of India, is a matter of very deep and immediate concern which requires emergency measures.”
