Not so long ago, Senator Tom Cotton was lambasted by leftist politicians and journalists for an Op-Ed he wrote in the New York Times entitled ‘Send in the Troops’. Despite his solution to dealing with riots being measured and sensible, Senator Cotton was caricatured as an authoritarian lunatic by the leftist establishment, which was desperately trying to downplay the levels of violence seen in riots across the country. It’s now been over 100 days since the Portland riots began, and the Democrats running the city have failed to restore law and order. The ongoing violence has to end. It’s finally time for politicians to accept that Tom Cotton was right, and deploy the United States National Guard to protect the citizens of Portland.
At this point, it is blindingly obvious that these riots are no longer about racial justice. Throwing Molotov cocktails at the police, for example, is not the behaviour of a civil rights protester, but of a violent Marxist revolutionary, a reality that Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler and Oregon Governor Kate Brown must face. They have allowed the city of Portland to descend into anarchy and chaos, and now it is time for them to swallow their pride and accept the Trump Administration’s help (i.e. welcome the National Guard into Portland). Unfortunately, their inability to work across party lines continues to destroy the lives of Portland’s citizens; just Saturday night it was reported that officers were attacked with at least three incendiary devices. Repeated waves of anarchist violence have bathed the city in fire, graffiti and blood, yet the leftist politicians controlling Portland continue to insist there isn’t much to worry about.
The protests-turned-riots began after the murder of George Floyd by Derek Chauvin, a Minneapolis police officer, during which Chauvin knelt on Floyd’s neck for almost nine minutes. People were understandably outraged by this incident, with many taking to the streets all over the United States to express their outrage. Whilst many demonstrations were originally peaceful, they were soon hijacked by violent thugs and Antifa terrorists, who used their ‘anger’ and ‘frustration’ as an excuse to violently riot and loot. The rioters indiscriminately destroyed businesses, police stations, cars and homes. As a libertarian, I wholeheartedly support people’s right to peacefully protest. However, the instant protests turn into riots is the instant that they begin to infringe upon other people’s rights, and it is then that law and order must be restored. If the police fail to do this, like in Portland, then State Governors should accept Federal assistance in the form of the National Guard.
The inability of the local and state government to bring the Portland riots under control recently had deadly consequences (and not for the first time). On August 29th, a 39-year-old man by the name of Aaron J. Danielson was gunned down in the streets of Portland by an Antifa terrorist. The media and Democrat politicians rushed to depict him as a far-right villain, who, by opposing rioters and defending his hometown of Portland, deserved to get shot. Governor Brown, for example, seemed to blame Danielson for his own death. She failed to express sorrow over the murder of an innocent man, stating that the group Danielson belonged to, Patriot Prayer, ‘drove into downtown Portland last night, armed and looking for a fight.’. This display of apathy and blame-shifting by the Governor of Oregon shows that the loyalty of Democratic politicians lies with the radical Marxists that fund them, not with the American people.
This was not Portland’s first death, nor will it be its last, unless Governor Brown and Mayor Wheeler allow the National Guard to enter Portland and protect its citizens. Only a display of force by the Federal government will deter the violent hooligans and thugs littering the streets of Portland from continuing to break the law. Yet, with violence spiralling out of control in her streets, Governor Brown remains adamant; the National Guard will not enter Portland. It seems that she has become blinded by her political affiliation as to what is happening in her state, and as to how bad it is becoming. It is time to accept that Tom Cotton was right. These are not peaceful protesters. They are violent thugs, and they must be stopped at all costs. The National Guard must be deployed to Portland, Oregon.
