Near 1 a.m. shots rang out at the annual “34th-n-eat” block party injuring 20 people, including a police officer who is fighting for her life, and killing one teenager, Christopher Brown.
Christopher Brown’s mother and grandmother say he was a good kid who just wanted to have fun at the neighborhood party. His mom said he had a 1-year-old son and another baby on the way. His grandmother pleaded for shootings, like this one, to stop.
Police responded to the call after shots were fired at the large gathering of hundreds of people at 3300 block of Dubois Place in Southeast Washington. The other victims’ injuries were non-life-threatening, only bullet grazings. Many were able to walk to a close-by fire station and hospital.
Witnesses say an argument broke out at the party and that many people pulled their guns and began shooting. D.C. Fire and EMS responded to the scene littered with glass and bullet casings.
In response to the shooting, the mayor talked about how the gathering was illegal in a number of ways. Specifically mentioning the gathering having more than 50 people. She briefly touched on people having no regard for human life and shooting them.
Police believe there to be at least three shooters.
