There is still no official release of what was the cause of the explosion but Abbas Ibrahim, the Lebanese General Security Chief believes it may have been explosive material that was confiscated and being stored at the port.

The material used in the explosion was confirmed to be ammonium nitrate. Prime Minister Hassan Diab said, “It is unacceptable that a shipment of ammonium nitrate estimated at 2,750 tons has been present for six years in a warehouse without taking preventive measures that endanger the safety of citizens.”

More news will be reported as it released.
