In a press conference, President Trump announced that he will be reinstituting sanctions on Iran. He called the procedure a “snapback” and said something like this was not uncommon.
The President has directed Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to alert the United Nations Security Council of his intention to restore nearly all of the sanctions of Iran that had formerly been suspended.
It is unconfirmed when this “snapback” of sanctions will be implemented, but it is expected to happen on Thursday as Mike Pompeo will be in New York that day to meet with UN chief Antonio Guterres and Guterres’s home around 2 pm in New York.
In 2015 the accord with Tehran that was designed to prevent it from developing nuclear weapons was lifted, this announcement reverses that lift. Many European nations on the Security Council are not in favor of this decision and fear it will destroy the nuclear deal that they are trying to save.
During an interview with Fox, Mike Pompeo said that the United States will “absolutely” impose sanctions on Russia and China as well if they refuse to impose the sanctions on Iran.
