Jacob Blake was shot in the back by police which has sparked violent protests in Kenosha, Wisconsin.
City officials issued a 7 pm curfew on Monday and police have suggested to businesses that they stay closed due to the growing unrest.
The shooting happened after police responded to a domestic call. Witnesses say that Blake was trying to break up the fight that police had received the call for around five o’clock last night.
Reports say that Blake had been tazed, but continued walking. Video shows Blake walking around to the driver’s side of the vehicle. Police had their weapons drawn and were giving orders, but Blake didn’t stop. He opened the driver door and reached in, then an officer grabbed his shirt to pull him back and shots were fired.
The Wisconsin Justice Department and the Division of Criminal Investigation have taken over investigating the case.
Benjamin Crump, who is a civil rights attorney and is representing the family, said that Blake’s children were in the car at the time. Previous reports state that Blake has had encounters with the police before for things like brandishing a weapon inside a bar and resisting arrest.
Officers administered aid to Blake and he was airlifted to Froedtert Hospital in Milwaukee. He is out of surgery and recovering in the ICU.
