An explosion in the capital of Lebanon happened in an area housing highly explosive materials destroying several buildings and injuring hundreds. The amount of casualties is overwhelming hospitals.
Officials are still unsure what has caused the explosion but an investigation is underway. Some reports say that it may have been an accident and Lebanon’s National News Agency reported that a fire broke out in the building storing the explosives.
The explosion happened near the scene of where ex-Prime Minister Rafik Hairi was killed from a car bombing.
This explosion could not have come at a worse time for Lebanese people. The country is near the edge of an economic collapse and citizens are awaiting the verdict of a trial from the bombing that killed the ex-Prime Minister. There is also high tension at the border with Israel. This explosion has left the country shaken.
