Trump first announced his plan to leave the WHO in May and has continued to say that the believes the WHO is responsible for aiding China in covering up the origins of the virus. Trump also said if the WHO had promptly and properly relayed information about the virus, then he could have enacted a travel ban to and from China much sooner.

Critics Respond

GOP members have urged President Trump to reconsider termination with the organization with the argument that the United States could bring better change to the organization by remaining members. But Trump stands firm that the U.S. is being taken advantage of by the World Health Organization.

Many people have expressed concern over the President’s decision to leave the WHO during the pandemic, but Trump and supporters of the decision say there is a far greater concern for staying with the organization, especially during a pandemic. Trump is gravely worried about the WHO and how their response to the virus, a valid concern noted by many as well.

If Biden wins in November, and that is a BIG IF, the exit decision could be reversed. Critics are hoping that such would be the case.

UN Diplomat told CNN, “Whatever is done now can be reversed in the year to come, because it will not be final.”
