In the early 1970s when the USAF was developing their F15 air superiority fighter, and the US Navy was developing their F14 fighter, US congress was looking for cheaper fighters to develop along side the F15 and F14; this ultimately led to a competition between Northrup’s YF17 and General Dynamics YF16 in the USAF’s Lightweight fighter competition.
Ultimately the USAF chose the YF16 which became the F16, and the US Navy chose the YF17 which later became the F18. The F16 is capable of reaching speeds up to 1500 mph and a reaching a range of 2,622 miles. The F18 is capable of speeds up to 1190 mph.
Both aircrafts have been a huge asset to the USAF and US Navy, and are both still in service; although the aircrafts have seen newer variants such as the F18 Super hornet. Which is your favorite aircraft? Vote now in our Raging Patriot Poll!
